I see this as a face saving act from general motors. Although they dub it as the Challenge X Competition, the Detroit giant has suffered heavily for not thinking about the environment. This was exactly the reason why Toyota succeeded in toppling GM as the largest automaker . Toyota has gotten more popular with time and GM has a lot of gap to fill in. The hard work of these students would be used handily to evolve technology to make GM popular once again.
